The Columbia Business School Alumni Club of New York is convening a panel of industry experts to share their insights on what it takes to win in the world of entrepreneurship. The Art of Entrepreneurship – Creating Companies and Cashing In is about real entrepreneurs with real experiences to share with those who are thinking to found a startup, or have already begun and want to interact with those who have successfully started and sold their companies.

Entrepreneurship is an essential driver of value creation – but why do entrepreneurs rarely enjoy a Wall Street-type payout?

Studies have shown that after a year of pre-startup activity, only about 20 percent of the businesses have successfully begun. Of those companies that launch, more than 50% fail within the first year, and 95% are shuttered within 5 years.

Given these odds, what can entrepreneurs do to maximize their chances of success? Many dynamics are at play including access to financial capital, technology, social networks, and technical expertise to name a few.

The speakers will address the following topics:

> How investors screen ideas and business plans
> Essential elements of a business plan
> “Free” money: SBIR and other non-dilutive funding alternatives
> Raising capital: How to get professional nivestors and achieve a top valuation
> Exit strategies: How to plan for an IPO, strategic exit or succession

Panelists include:
> Peter Shankman, HARO
